Halloween Spider & Web

Easy Skill

 

Size:Web - About 5" round,

Spider - About 1" high by 1½" wide.

 

Materials:Crochet Cotton Thread Size 10 - White & Black; Thread Needle; Cardboard, Plastic Wrap and Fabric Stiffener.

 

Crochet Hook:Steel crochet hook # 7

Gauge: 8 sc and 8 rnds = 1 inch.

 

Abbreviations

beg - beginning
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
hdc - half double crochet
lp - loop
rem - remaining
rep - repeat
rnd - round
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
sp - space
st - stitch
tr - treble crochet
yo - yarn over

JOINING WITH SC

When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

 

French Knot:

Bring threaded needle up from wrong to right side of work at A. Wrap thread twice around needle. Tighten the twists and insert needle again at A. Pull needle with firm even pressure until the thread slides through the wrapped thread, making a knot that lies on the right side as shown below.

 

Stiffening Directions

Cut a piece of cardboard larger than the article to be stiffened. Cover the cardboard with clear plastic wrap.

Soak piece in fabric stiffener, squeeze out excess.

Position piece on plastic and pin in place.

Allow to dry overnight.

 

SPIDER WEB

Rnd 1:With White, ch 6, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), (dc, ch 2) 7 times in ring; join with sl st to first dc.

DO NOT TURN EACH ROUND.

Rnd 2:Ch 7 (counts as first dc and ch 4)(dc in next dc, ch 4) 7 times; join.

Rnd 3:Ch 9 (counts as first dc and ch 6)(dc in next dc, ch 6) 7 times; join.

Rnd 4:Ch 11 (counts as first dc and ch 8)(dc in next dc, ch 8) 7 times; join.

Rnd 5:Ch 6 (counts as first dc and ch 3), sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 2 ch, * ch 10, dc in next dc, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st in dc; rep from * around; join. Finish off and weave in ends.

 

Finishing

- Follow stiffening directions and pin Web in place, stretching tips to 5" across and having all tips evenly spaced.

 

SPIDER (Make 2)

Rnd 1:With Black, ch 2, work 6 sc in first ch (6 sc). Do not join, mark ends of each rnd.

Rnd 2:Work 2 sc in each scaround. (12 sc).

Rnd 3:(Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4:(Mouth & Leg) * Sl st in next st, ch 6, sc in ea ch back to st just worked, sl st in same st;* rep from * to * twice more, sl st in next 6 sts; rep from * to * 3 times, sl st in next 3 sts; Mouth - (ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st in same st just worked) twice. Finish off and weave in ends.

 

Finishing

- With W, embroider 2 French Knots just above mouth for eyes.

- Starch as for Web, curling legs towards mouth.

- Attach a 4" piece of White thread to the back of one Spider. Tie thread as shown hanging from the web. Position other Spider on Web.
