Dutch Iris

 

Skill Level: Easy

 

Materials: This flower can be worked with any weight of yarn. Finer weights will create a smaller flower, and bulkier weights will create a larger flower. Use the hook size appropriate for the yarn you choose.

We used: Worsted Weight yarn and a size F-5 hook.

 

 

Abbreviations:

ch - chain

slst - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

hdc - half double crochet

dc - double crochet

tr - treble crochet

 

Special Stitches:

Double Treble Crochet (dtr): yo 3 times, insert hook into the next st, draw up a lp and pull through (5 lps on hook). [Yo and pull through 2 lps] 4 times.

 

Small Petals (make three)

Rnd. 1: With Yellow, ch10, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 ch, [2sc, ch3, 2sc] in next ch, working in back loops of beginning ch, sc in next 7, slst in last ch, do not join. Fasten off Yellow. 20st, 1 ch-2sp

Rnd. 2: With Purple, join with slst to last stitch worked, skip first slst, slst in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next 4 sc, [3tr, ch2, 3tr] in next ch-3sp, dc in next 4 sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, slst in next sc, ch1, turn. 24sts, 1 ch-2sp

Rnd. 3: Skip first slst, slst in next 4 st, sc in next 2 st, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 st, 2tr in next 2 sts, [3dtr, ch2, 3dtr] in next ch-2sp, 2tr in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 st, hdc in next st, sc in next 2 st, slst in next 4 st, leave remaining st unworked, fasten off. 32sts, 1 ch-2sp

 

Large Petals (make two)

Rnd. 1: With Yellow, ch12, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 9 ch, [2dc, ch2, 2dc] in next ch, working in back loops of beginning ch, sc in next 9 ch, slst in next ch, do not join. Fasten off. 24sts, 1 ch-2sp

Rnd. 2: With Purple, join with slst to last st worked, skip first slst, slst in next sc, sc in next 6 st, hdc in next 3 st, 2dc in next st, [3tr, ch2, 3tr] in next ch-2sp, 2dc in next st, hdc in next 3 st, sc in next 6 st, slst in next st, leave remaining st unworked, ch1, turn. 30 st

Rnd. 3: Skip first slst, slst in next 5 st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 st, tr in next st, 2tr in next 4 st, [3dtr, ch2, 3dtr] in next ch-2sp, 2tr in next 4 st, tr in next st, dc in next 2 st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, slst in next 5 st, leave remaining st unworked, fasten off. 42st

 

Assembly: Place petals in desired position (refer to picture), weave yarn through bottom of Petals, pull tight, tie securely.

Note: if using as a sewn on decoration-omit Center. If a Bearded Iris is desired, sc, ch3 in each st around the petals.

 

Center

Rnd. 1: With Green, ch6, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, 6sc in middle of ring. Do not join, mark beginning sc (in this and following Rnds). 6sc

Rnd. 2: 2sc in each sc. 12 sc

Rnd. 3: *Sc in next 3sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from *to* 5 times. 15sc

Rnd. 4: Sc in each sc around. 15sc

Rnds. 5-8: Repeat Rnd 4, join with slst to beg sc at end of Rnd. 8, fasten off, leaving long tail. 15sc

 

Insert Petals inside Center. Using long tail, tack in place.
