Crochet

Crochet (often confused with Knitting), is a needlework technique using a crochet hook and yarn or thread, various crochet stitches and sometimes a crochet pattern to create everything from; delicate crochet doilies to afghans (blankets),amigurumi (stuffed animals), hats (beanies), shawls, cowls, dishcloths and more.

Crochet hooks range in sizes starting with tiny steel crochet hooks.

Steel crochet hooks are typically used when working with crochet threads and lace-weight yarns.  Steel hooks are sized differently than regular hooks - the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is opposite regular hook sizing. Sizes are given in one or both ranges - millimeter or US number range.

Crochet hooks range in size from smaller B-1 (2.25mm) used for finer yarns to larger T/X (30mm) hooks used for heavier bulky weight yarns or several strands of lighter yarn used together.  Hook manufacturers use both numbers and/or letters and metric sizing on hooks and needle packaging.  Letter and number sizing vary greatly between manufacturers, so it is best to rely on the millimeter sizing and a gauge swatch.

Crochet yarns come in balls/skeins or hanks.  The yarn labels usually contain a number between 0-7, with 0 being the finest lace weight yarns and 7 the thickest super bulky weight yarns.  The most used yarn is a number 3-4 weight – often called worsted weight or DK weight.  This weight is typically used to crochet blankets, baby booties, layettes, amigurumi, home décor, potholders, dishcloths, fashions including sweaters, cardigans, ponchos, shawls, cowls, hats and more.
