The pattern yields a beautiful and comfortable afghan, even when made from a variety of scraps. On mine, every block was a different shade. I worked each block from two skeins of the background color and a smaller bobbin of the background material to fill in the top of the heart. I did carry the colored yarn over in the few rows at the top of the heart. My only modification of the directions was to start the edging of each block 90 degrees counter clockwise of the marked corner. This may be a function of how I assembled the afghan (bottom row first, left to right), but it kept the joining of the border on a corner that was not also being joined to another square.
