HAVE SOME FALL FUN WITH THIS FESTIVE CROCHET PATTERN
I just finished my last set - I tried all sizes - using Knitpicks Brava Sport yarn. The sizes turn out perfectly. To make larger hats for the two larger sizes I switched to Brava Worsted, which is the same yarn a little bit thicker. I did this because just using larger hooks as suggested in the pattern makes the hats for the larger sizes somewhat "wobbly". You could probably also double the thinner yarn to achieve a similar result.
I'm left-handed. The only thing I had to change when following the pattern was for the Collar, Rnd 1. Replace "join A with a sl st in sp to the RIGHT of a shell" with "join A with a sl st in sp to the LEFT of a shell", and everything else will fall into place as instructed.
I did struggle a bit with Row 1 of the Collar, probably because I was brought up crocheting following charted patterns. The "*" repeats were confusing, but once I made it through the first collar, the rule is simple: Spread 5 shells evenly around the collar, and fill the gaps with 3dc ch 1.
Bonus suggestion: I used some of the leftover yarn to make a little candy cane shaped purse to go along with the set. Just start at the bottom and crochet about 45 sc in rounds, about 5 rounds yellow, 10 rounds orange, 5 rounds white. After 8 rows from the beginning start to gently decrease towards the top (I decreased 2 stitches on opposite ends of the rounds every other row until about 31 stitches). Put some handles on top, close the bottom seam and hold it in a little bit, and you're done. Probably a purse too small for trick-or-treat, if you are into that, but definitely big enough for a little girl's secret treasures.
