Butterfly Apron

Intermediate Skill

Materials: Size 30 Crochet Cotton: Blue, Shaded Pinks and Multicolor.

Cotton Broadcloth - 1 yd Light Blue.

Crochet Hook: Steel No. 13 (0.85 mm).

JOINING WITH SC
When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

Special Stitches

Treble Cluster (tr-cl):Keeping last loop of each st on hook, work 3 tr in st or sp indicated, yo and pull through all loops on hook.


BUTTERFLY
Top Wing (Make 2)
Row 1:With Shaded Pinks, ch 7, [tr, (ch 1, tr) twice] in 7th ch from hook.
Row 2:Ch 7 (counts as first tr and ch 3), turn, (tr-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 3) twice, (tr-cl, ch 2, tr) in last sp.

Row 3:Ch 7, turn, tr-cl in first sp, (ch 3, tr-cl in next sp) twice, ch 3, (tr-cl, ch 2, tr) in last sp. (4 tr-cl)

Row 4:Ch 7, turn, tr-cl in first sp, (ch 3, tr-cl in next sp) 3 times, ch 3, (tr-cl, ch 2, tr) in last sp. (5 tr-cl)

Finish off.

Row 5:Turn, join Multicolor with sl st in first sp, (ch 4, sc in same sp, ch 4, sc in next sp) 5 times across to end sp, ch 2, dc in same end sp. (11 lps)

Rows 6-11:Ch 4, turn, sc in next lp, (ch 4, sc in next lp) across to 2nd last lp, ch 2, dc in last lp. (10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 lps)

Row 12:Ch 4, turn, tr-cl in next lp, ch 4, (tr-cl, ch 7, tr-cl) in next lp, ch 4, tr-cl in next lp, tr in next (end) lp.

Row 13:Ch 4, turn, dc between first 2 clusters, ch 4, (tr-cl, ch 7, tr-cl) in next ch-7 sp, ch 4, dc in next sp, tr in next (end) sp.

Row 14:Ch 1, turn, skip (tr, dc), sc in next ch-4 sp, [(ch 5, dc) 4 times] in next ch-7 sp, ch 4, skip next ch-4 sp, sl st in next dc. Finish off.

NOTE: Use right side of Row 14 as right side of Wings.

Lower Wing
(Make 2)
Rows 1-4:Rep Top Wing Rows 1-4.
Row 5:Turn, join Multicolor with sl st in first sp, (ch 4, sc in next sp) 4 times, ch 2, dc in next (end) sp.
Row 6:Ch 4, turn, sc in next lp, (ch 4, sc in next lp) twice, ch 2, dc in next (end) lp.
Row 7:Ch 4, turn, sc in next lp, ch 4, sc in next lp, ch 2, dc in next (end) lp. Finish off.

NOTE: Use right side of Row 7 as right side of Wings.

Edging
Rnd 1:
With all Wings right-side up, join Blue with sc to starting st of a Top Wing and work sc closely around Wing, (working over thread ends left from previous rows), ch 2, sc in starting st of a Lower Wing and work sc closely around Wing, ch 1, sc in starting st of 2nd Lower Wing, work sc around Wing and with work untwisted, made 2 dc in ch-2 between Top Wing and first Lower Wing, sc in starting st of 2nd Top Wing, work sc around Wing, 2 dc in bar of 2nd dc made between Wings, join with sl st to first sc. Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 2:With right side facing, join Multicolor to same sc, (ch 3, skip next sc, sc in next sc) around all Wings; join. Finish off leaving long end.

- Overlap Top Wings over Lower Wings slightly and tack together.

Body
Row 1:
With Blue, ch 5, 4 dc in 5th ch from hook.
Row 2:Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first dc, (2 dc in next dc) 3 times. (8 dc)
Row 3:Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across.
Row 4:Ch 1, turn, (skip next dc, sc in next dc) 4 times.
Row 5:Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (4 sc)
Row 6:Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in each sc. (8 dc)
Rows 7-8:Rep Rows 3-4.
Row 9:Ch 1, turn, skip first sc, sc in next 3 sc.
Row 10:Ch 1, turn, skip first sc, 2 sc in next sc, * ch 25, sl st in 8th ch from hook, sl st in next 17 ch *, sc in same sc on head; rep from * to *, 2 sc in same sc on head. Finish off and weave in ends.

Assembly of Butterfly- use photo as guide
- Roll Body lengthwise and sew edges together at back.
- Sew Body in place between Wings.

APRON

- Make 8 Butterflies.
- Cut cloth 24 inches wide by 20 inches long, rounded bottom.
- Place 1 Butterfly at center on bottom edge, then arrange 3 around each side to within 2 inches of top. Baste lightly.

Apron Edging Pieces
Row 1:
With Blue, (ch 6, dc in 6th ch from hook) repeated to reach between 2 Butterflies.
Row 2:Ch 3, sc in first dc-sp, (ch 3, sc in same dc-sp, ch 3, sc in next sp) across. Finish off and weave in ends.
Row 3:Join Shaded Pinks with sc to first lp of last row, (ch 3, sc in next lp) across. Finish off and weave in ends.

- Make an edging piece for each space between Butterflies and from last Butterfly on each side up to top.
- Hem down inner edge of Edging Pieces and outside edge of Butterflies.
- Cut cloth ¼ inch from stitching, turn edge back against crochet and hem down.
- Cut a Band of cloth 4 inches wide and 16 inches long and sew to top of apron.
- Cut 2 ties 4 inches wide by 30 inches long. Hem both long sides and one end of each. Gather other end into ends of Band.
- Cut a Pocket 4 ½ inches wide by 5 ½ inches long with a rounded bottom edge.
- Sew last Butterfly across top of Pocket, with a length of Edging around edge of Pocket. Sew Pocket in place.
- Steam and press apron dry on back through a cloth.
