Anne Orr Anne Orr started a career in the crochet and needlework industry when few women considered or attempted to make it in the business world. Born in 1874 in Nashville, Tennessee, Anne Orr used to her talent and imagination to become a self-published author of needlework designs. Her technical skills and creativity caught the attention of several major publishers, including Good Housekeeping magazine, Better Homes and Gardens magazine, Coats and Clark and American Thread Company. Her drive for success led her to produce close to 100 needlework design booklets between the years of 1910 and 1945. Many of her designs are still used by needlework and crocheters who desire the vintage and delicate patterns she is known for. Pattern collectors with an appreciation for fine work still hold tight to her designs. Anne Orr lived from 1875 to 1945, during a period of great change and artistic expression. This time period included the Edwardian era with Victorian designs, the roaring 1920's and two World Wars. Orr used her natural talent to design home accessories, including patterns for table runners, doilies, pillows, rugs, luncheon sets and centerpieces. She also designed clothing items such as baby sweaters, booties, caps, crochet yokes, collars and cuffs. These heirloom crochet items are classic designs that are as enjoyable to make now as they were when Anne Orr first published them many years ago. |
