Designer Profile

Mary Pueschner

Mary inherited her artistic talent and love of creating things. She was an art major in school and was lucky enough to have a teacher that was multi-talented. He taught her not only oil painting, but also copper enameling, wood carving, and leather craft.

Shortly after high school she married and had a son and daughter. She taught herself to design leather rifle scabbards, gun belts and holsters, purses, billfolds and belts. She also designed a set of leather golf club covers. Mary’s husband is a skilled sheet metal man and made several tools for her to use in leather work. She pursued this craft for a number of years and actually taught leather craft at a junior high school for 3 years. “It is amazing to watch students who were 'trouble makers' become intensely involved in a project and show a talent. Their whole attitude changes when they see that they have created something truly beautiful. The students would really 'light up' when they see that their parents are proud of their accomplishments, too. Their self-esteem soars and they feel really good about themselves. This can make a lasting change in the child’s behavior.” Mary says of the experience.

Mary was taught to crochet by an Aunt when she was 8 or 9 years old. She taught her the basics, and Mary taught herself how to design. Mary didn’t get into crocheting heavily until the birth of her grandsons in the late eighties. She made each grandchild a personalized afghan and a stuffed animal coin bank. Shortly thereafter, friends asked her to design Afghans to match the theme of their own baby's nursery. Mary has designed many stuffed animal coin banks by request and has about 20 original designs’ in her collection. She can design an array of products for infants, toddlers and adults.

Several years ago, a friend asked Mary to design some wire crochet earrings to match a necklace that a friend had knit for her. This launched her in another direction with crochet. She now makes wire crochet earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Family and friends encouraged Mary to sell her designs, and so, here she is. Mary said, “It is wonderful to be able to create things that other people enjoy. My head is always filled with new ideas. Even when I am working on one project, I am already thinking about my next one.”

Mary’s latest creations are Best Friends Afghan and Bear, And Baby Makes Three Afghan and Pillow, along with Hummers and Hibiscus Afghan and Pillows Patterns. These three welcome additions to Maggie's Crochet had been raved about for several months before the patterns were even introduced! All the attention is truly a testament to Mary's talent for beautiful designs.

The next anticipated release of Mary's designs are for Abby, Allie and Annie (18”) Doll Outfits. She had never thought about this aspect until Maggie's Crochet asked designers for doll clothes patterns. So with a borrowed "American Girl" doll she has had fun designing new outfits for Maggie’s Crochet.
