Hugs for Homeless Animals is a non-profit organization based in Oregon. The organization started in 1996 with the goal of providing humane animal education through support programs that bring the public and animal organizations together. Crocheters that have a soft spot for animals can assist this charity by crocheting comfort blankets that are placed in the animal kennels and housing units. Hugs for Homeless Animals calls these blankets “Snuggles”, a term used to describe how these homemade blankets give lost or abandoned animals a warm spot off the cold kennel floors. Hugs for Homeless Animals maintains a World-wide Shelter Directory to make it easy for you to find a shelter in your area to drop off a “Snuggles” donation.
Hugs for Homeless Animals has a need for three three sizes of “Snuggles” blankets; 12 inches by 12 inches for small animals and cats, 24 inches by 24 inches for medium-sized animals and 36 inches by 36 inches for large-sized animals. Crochet blankets made from a washable yarn is preferred for sanitary reasons. Choose a high quality acrylic or cotton yarn that will withstand laundering in a washing machine. Avoid adding embellishments or fringe to the blankets to prevent choking hazards with the animals. Weave all yarn ends thoroughly into the blanket to prevent fraying.
