Indian Summer Afghan Crochet Pattern

This afghan is beautiful, but there must be mistakes somewhere in the instructions for the first row. I've tried 8 ways of interpreting the first and second rows, but none of them end up the way the pattern is written. I only come up with 116 shells and 116 spaces at the end of row 2 (supposedly you're to have 118 shells and spaces). I've crocheted for over 40 years and never in my life has anything annoyed me as much as this pattern has.
