Monarch Butterfly Fridgie

Size: 5-1/2" wide x 3" tall

MATERIALS: Worsted Weight Yarn -

Small amounts of 18 yards Variegated Blue (MC) and 10 yards Black (CC). One piece of black chenille stem. 

Crochet Hook:Size F, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge:Rnd 1 = 1-1/2"

Shell:(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same st.

 

DIRECTIONS

Rnd 1(right side): With MC, ch 10, join with sl st to form ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), 23 dc in ring; join with a sl st in first dc. (24 dc)

Rnd 2:Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same st as joining, skip 2 sts, (shell in next st, skip 2 sts) 7 times. (8 shells).

Rnd 3:Sl st in next 2 dc and ch-3 sp, ch 3, (4 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) in space of shell (large wing made), * sc between 2 shells, (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) in ch-3 sp of next shell (another large wing made), sc between 2 shells, 9 dc in ch-3 sp of next shell (small wing made), sc between 2 shells, 9 dc in ch-3 sp of next shell (another small wing made), sc between 2 shells *, (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) in ch-3 sp of next shell, rep from * to * once; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (8 wings) Finish off.

Rnd 4:Right Side Facing, join CC in any dc, ch 1, sc in each dc around working 6 sc in each ch-3 space; join with sl st in first sc. Finish off and weave ends.

Finishing

Fold Butterfly in half, wrong side facing matching large wings with large wings and small wings with small wings as shown in picture. Fold Chenille Stem in half. Place fold at lower center of body between 2 small wings as shown in picture. Twist Chenille at center top of body. Curl ends.

 

Maggie Suggests: Wrap the chenille aroundthe end of a crochet hook in a tight spiral to form the body as shown in the Green Butterfly photo.

my mom used to make these but she passed away in May of 1995. I still have several of these magnets saved back in my cedar chest and I am so glad to finally see a pattern I can make for my family. Thanks for sharing.
